Es funktioniert!
Da auf dem board ein steckplatz für ein 24Cxx ist und ich noch einen 24C16 herumfliegen hatte habe ich diesen einfach einmal draufgesteck...

Und Ping funtioniert auch einwandfrei.
Wundert mich nur ein wenig denn zumindest ping müsste doch ohne zusätzlichen speicher funktionieren.
