Question About Using Stepper Motors with External Power Supply and Arduino

Bewerten
Hi everyone,

I’m currently working on a small robot arm project using an Arduino Uno and a couple of NEMA 17 stepper motors. I’ve run into a bit of confusion regarding powering the stepper motors with an external power supply.

Right now, I’m using the A4988 driver modules, and I’ve read that it’s important to connect the grounds of the Arduino and the external power source together to avoid erratic behavior. My question is:

What’s the safest and most stable way to wire everything when using a 12V external power supply for the motors and powering the Arduino via USB at the same time?

Should I:

Connect the GND from the power supply to both the A4988 and the Arduino?

Use a common ground but isolate the motor power and logic power more carefully?

I’d really appreciate any diagrams or personal tips on setups that have worked well for you. I just want to make sure I don’t damage my Arduino or drivers. Thanks in advance!

Best regards,

fnaf 2 is a survival horror game that puts your nerves to the test from the very beginning of that experience. You will find yourself in a security office that is constantly being threatened when you play the game Fnaf 2. Animatronics are becoming increasingly hostile, and every second feels like it may be dangerous.

Great question about wiring your stepper motors—connecting the external 12V supply’s GND to both the A4988 and Arduino’s GND is key for stability, and I’ve used that setup without issues for similar projects! While you’re focused on your robot arm now, it’s fun to think about how hobby projects like this can spark skills that might even factor into long-term plans, like figuring out tech side hustles you could enjoy well into the future—maybe even using a tool like RetireCalc later to see how those skills might support your goals.

Figuring out the right wiring for your Arduino and stepper motors is key to avoiding damage—once you nail that, if you ever expand your robot arm project into something bigger (like a small workshop build), a Construction Loan Calculator could even help map out costs if you need extra space or tools.
